Learning to surf at 64 years old

What led you to make the decision to start surfing at an age that many already consider advanced for certain sports?

On a sunny morning in October, a man from Austria named Christian sees me during a class at the beach and decides that he also wants to try for the first time in his life a sport that he had only seen in photos and videos.

That morning the waves were small but when I saw his motivation trying to get up on the board and ride a wave, something in me knew that Christian really had it inside him and my task was to make that come out.

And so it was, finally he surfed just two waves that made him totally addicted to this thing that for many of us is a fundamental part of our lives, Surfing. Then we said goodbye with a hug and a big smile, wishing him a safe flight back to his native Austria.

At the beginning of January I got a reservation for a 5 days of surfing, and what was my surprise when I saw that it was Christian who came back for his surfing dose, more eager than ever to ride waves again in Maspalomas.

But this time something had changed and Christian came with his own wetsuit, he came with his homework done at home, talking about boards, fin systems, and even asking me for advice on buying his own surfboard.

This seemed familiar to me, this interest in learning and enjoying the beautiful learning process, is what I felt when I started when I was 9 years old and what I feel as I continue to advance at a technical level, what I feel every morning just to know if I will be able to surf, and that fills us with happiness every time we enter the Sea, drawing on each of us who love the Ocean, a huge and bright smile.

I have always said that I would like to grow old and continue surfing every day, enjoying what my life has been. And it is seeing people like Christian that fills me with happiness and motivation to continue every day as I did before, feeling like that 9-year-old child who has just caught his first wave and who dreams of waking up to get into the ocean again and surf one more wave.
