How to interpret WINDGURU

In this post we are going to teach you how to interpret a wave and wind forecast page so that you know in advance the conditions that will exist for surfing.

Indicate that this is a forecast page, which does not mean that it will be 100% fulfilled, although according to evaluations on the same page it will be more accurate.

The first thing we have to do is find the beach or spot where we are going to surf and we will get a 7-day forecast.

As it is a forecast, the ideal is to trust 90% of tomorrow’s forecast, 80% of the day after tomorrow, and continue lowering the percentage as you look at more distant days since when you look further away the forecast may change as the days go by.

The wind: Direction, intensity and gusts

In this forecast we can see

The wind speed in the area measured in knots

Wind gusts, which is the speed that the wind can reach at a given time, can last a few seconds and also increase in power.

The wind direction where the arrows indicate where the wind goes North, South, East, West, etc.

The stars are the page’s rating regarding the probability that the prediction will come true, the more stars the greater the reliability.

Waves: Period and direction

In this graph we can see the Wave, which is the size that the wave will reach in meters and is measured from sea level

The wave period, which is the time that passes between one breaking wave and the next.

And the direction of said waves, where the arrows will show us the direction from which said waves will come

Here we have an example of the period and direction of the waves, in which as the color of the sea changes, the period will be bigger or smaller.

Finally, it should be said that Windguru also offers other prediction models, but they are usually paid, such as WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting). The one that Windguru shows for free is the GFS (Global Forecast System) or GFS13km.

I hope it is helpful to you and I say on a personal note that I always like to compare several prediction pages and thus contrast and see the probability of success between all these pages.
