If you’re learning how to surf, there’s something just as important as balance and technique: knowing the surf rules. These basic rules keep everyone safe, ensure respect in the lineup, and make surfing way more fun.
At SOUTHCOAST srfschool, we teach our students not only how to catch waves but also the essential surf etiquette that every surfer should follow.

What is Surf Etiquette?
Surf etiquette is the unwritten code of conduct in the water. By following these rules, surfers avoid accidents, respect each other’s space, and create a positive vibe in the lineup.

The 10 Basic Rules of Surfing
1. Respect Priority
The surfer closest to the peak has priority. If someone is already paddling for the wave, don’t drop in.

2. Don’t Snake Other Surfers
“Snaking” means paddling around someone to steal their spot. It’s bad manners — wait your turn!
3. Keep Control of Your Board
Never let go of your surfboard. A loose board can injure other surfers or swimmers.

4. Respect Everyone in the Water
The ocean belongs to everyone — beginners, advanced surfers, and swimmers alike. Show respect at all times.
5. Don’t Block the Wave
When paddling back out, avoid the surfer riding the wave. Go around the shoulder instead.

6. Communicate Clearly
A quick nod, hand signal, or “going left/right” can prevent collisions. Good communication is key.
7. Commit to the Wave
If you paddle for a wave, go for it with determination. Hesitating can put others in danger.

8. Protect the Beach and Ocean
Always pick up your trash, respect marine life, and keep the ocean clean.
9. Safety Comes First
Look out for others. If you see someone in trouble, help them. Surfing is about community.
10. Share the Stoke
Surfing is fun, positive, and social. Smile, share waves, and enjoy the ride!

Why Are Surf Rules Important?
Following the basic rules of surfing will:
